Archbishop Shelton Joseph Fabre (born October 25, 1963) is an American Catholic prelate who serves as the fifth Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Louisville in Kentucky. Installed on March 30, 2022, he succeeded Archbishop Joseph Kurtz and made history as the archdiocese’s first Black leader. His episcopal motto is “Comfort my People” (Isaiah 40:1)
On a national level, Archbishop Fabre has a prominent profile within the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). He served as the chairman of the USCCB Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism from 2018 to 2023, where he authored the 2018 anti-racism pastoral letter, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love. He serves as a bishop-consultor for the Committee of Domestic Justice and Human Development and sits on the boards of Catholic Relief Services and the National Black Catholic Congress.
